Eddie Hearn, promoter for IBF, WBA, WBC, WBO lightweight champion Katie Taylor, indicates that her next fight will be a mandatory defense against unbeaten Miriam Gutierrez. Gutierrez, who holds the WBA’s interim-title, has an undefeated record of 13-0 with 5 wins by knockout. The contest is being targeted for a date in November.
Taylor, 34-years-old, is coming off a hard-fought win over Delfine Persoon. After fighting to a controversial decision victory over Persoon in June of 2019, Taylor set the record straight with a solid decision win in the rematch – which took place last month at Matchroom’s Fight Camp in Brentwood.
Hearn was initially looking to stage a card centered around female boxers which didn’t go over too well with Taylor. Gutierrez, 37-years-old, has played out her entire career in Spain. Taylor would be a serious step up in competition for her. Katie Taylor has to fight her WBA mandatory next, which is Gutierrez, that will be on a stand alone card in November that will be announced shortly.
I spoke to Katie Taylor about an all-women’s card. I thought that was a really good idea. Katie Taylor looked at me like she wanted to punch me when I said that. When I started thinking about it I understand what’s she’s saying. What they’re fighting for, away from the world championship, is equality. It’s not women’s boxing and men’s boxing it’s boxing.
